Tradeshow recap - Graph Exo 2011

Frank Romano at Graph Expo 2011Peter Martini of Dr. Gunther Kast Company spent two days with us at Graph Expo, sharing his vast knowledge of bookbinding while visiting a variety of bindery equipment and digital printing equipment exhibits. In addition to learning what was new in binding and printing technology, we stopped and listened to what Frank Romano had to say while speaking at the Kodak exhibit. The common theme throughout the show was shorter run lengths and how to successfully manage this trend.

Tradeshow Recap: 2011 Publishing Business Conference and Expo

Rob Mauritz and Joe Dunham at Publishing Business - April 2011
Joe Dunham and I recently returned from a great trip to New York City.  The purpose of the trip was to exhibit at the Publishing Business Conference and Expo. The sponsors of Publishing Business continue to do a masterful job of giving publishers and book manufacturers - new and old - a reason to attend. From sessions on digital printing and e-readers to giving away over 350 iPads to paid attendees, the show brought in a strong audience for those of us exhibiting.

We gave this DODOcase away in our booth.
LBS is a manufacturer and provider of materials for traditional book manufacturing - meaning the printing and binding of books. We are also embracing the changing world of publishing. In fact, if you stopped by our booth during the show, you had a chance to win a book-like iPad holder called a DODOcase. The winner was Tammy Gaines of The United Methodist Publishing House. We are encouraged by the ingenuity of bookbinders and other innovators and see a place for LBS materials in products like iPad or e-reader cases as we continue to look for new avenues to provide our materials.

One can't work all the time though. Joe and I found time to hit Broadway to see Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. We don't recommend it - it's as bad as the critics say. While no one flying around fell or got hurt - which is good - the giant spider near the end of the show got stuck going below stage and brought the action to a halt for a few minutes.

While Germany may not have Spider-Man, it does have Drupa. It is not too early to begin thinking about making plans for travel to Düsseldorf to see the world’s largest exhibition of bookbinding equipment, digital and offset printing devices and all of the materials that feed through these machines. The 2012 event is May 3 - 16. LBS will have representatives present for a portion of the show and materials in a variety of exhibits -- some running on live equipment. We are still working out the details, so please follow our e-blasts, blogs and website for regular updates.

Popularity of Combined and Universal Endsheets Drives Production Improvements at LBS

LBS endsheet machine operators are our sales team work closely to find the best solutions for our customers.

It’s been a few years now since we first presented the Combined™ and Universal™ endsheets as a simple solution for using a standard perfect binder to prepare text blocks for hard cover binding. Since that initial announcement, the endsheets have evolved and improved. Their popularity has grown by leaps and bounds!

Why all the excitement?!?!
Well, it’s simple really. Combined and Universal Endsheets are the new workhorse of the bindery; saving time, eliminating steps and ensuring quality. >Download our Combined and Universal Endsheet Brochure
  • No need for specialized equipment: Our endsheets are designed to feed from the cover feeder on ordinary perfect binders from leading equipment manufacturers such as Bourg, Duplo, Kolbus, Muller Martini, Standard Horizon and Wohlenberg. >Watch videos of Combined Endsheets running on different perfect binders.
  • Eliminate steps: No more tipping on endsheets or adding backlining after the fact. Everything happens in the binder - automatically.
  • Reinforced bookblock: As the endsheets are attached, the spine is wrapped in reinforcing fabric from head to tail and the book is ready to be trimmed, rounded if necessary and cased into a hard cover. High quality bookbinding doesn’t get any simpler than this!
Maintaining quality and customer satisfaction.
While we’re incredibly excited that LBS endsheets are flying off the shelf and out the door daily – service is still our top priority. We’re implementing long and short term plans to ensure our customers get the fastest delivery possible without sacrificing quality.
  • Investing in our employees: Our endsheet operators are talented people. They do a lot more than push a few buttons and box up endsheets. They know the inner workings of their equipment and play a big role in designing our new endsheet machines. Each order is custom and the operator is responsible for the quality and accuracy. Operators have big shoes to fill so we cross-train our employees on different pieces of equipment to ensure that lines keep running and orders keep shipping. We’ve even added another shift to keep up with demand.
  • Investing in equipment: LBS has installed three new endsheet machines in the last 5 years. Each one is custom-built and a design improvement over the previous version. (Number four is on order for 2012!)  >Watch a slide show of our newest endsheet machine in action.
  • Reviewing and streamlining processes: We love that the Combined and Universal Endsheets save our customers time and money by increasing bindery efficiency. We’ve also been working on increasing our efficiency through smarter ordering and simplified paperwork. So far we’ve been able to reduce set up time and waste – this is only the beginning!
  • Calling all experts: LBS has been in the book business for a long time and has a lot of knowledgeable people on staff but we know it’s also important to get an outside perspective. We’re grateful to have access to the best book experts in the world. We use the evaluation of our products and materials by published experts and our customers - who are expert bookbinders - as a compass to guide us in the right direction.
We’d love to hear your feedback on Combined and Universal Endsheets! Order samples for testing today.

LBS to Feature NEW Cover Materials and the Combined™ Endsheet at 2011 Publishing Business

I always know that Spring is here when preparations for the Publishing Business Conference are in full swing! That’s the buzz of the moment here at LBS. We’re sorting through stacks of gorgeous books and sheets of new cover material, making final tweaks to our booth display and debating what this year’s door prize should be.

We’ve been attending the Publishing Business Conference since the beginning. Remember when it was Book Business? How about Book Tech?!  It’s easy to get caught up in the great memories – but important to keep an eye on the future. Our industry has changed so much since that first Book Tech fourteen years ago. One thing that will never change is the personal service we offer each and every customer here at LBS.

We’ll be featuring some new additions to our cover material lines and showing how the Combined Endsheet is the workhorse of the bindery – allowing you to case-in a book block straight from the perfect binder.

If you’re able to make it, swing by booth 409 and ask Joe and Rob what’s new at LBS. We hope to see you at this year’s Publishing Business!
