Innovations in Hardcover Binding

Over the past five years, the model used to produce books has changed. There are now shorter runs and bindings on-demand. New machinery has been developed for the shorter-run market and existing equipment has been modified to respond to lower quantities.

Some binderies were applying a blank piece of paper in the cover feeder of a perfect binder to guard the adhesive and then were stripping off the paper on both sides of the book. The book block then moved on to the next steps for converting to a hardbound book.

We saw the opportunity for a new approach and as a result, developed a new endsheet that can run successfully in the cover feeder of most perfect binders. The adhesive can be PVA, hot melt, or PUR.

Apply endpapers and spine reinforcements at the same time with a perfect binder. The endsheet design uses two folded sheets combined with a reinforcing fabric. When the Combined™ endpaper is applied in the cover feed, it not only applies the reinforced endpaper but also applies the spine liner at the same time.

The model for book production has changed from long runs of 25,000 to 50,000 books to an average production of 500 to 1,000 books. Manufacturers of bookbinding equipment recognized the opportunity and now produce equipment for this bind-on-demand/short-run market. Much of the equipment represents stand-alone pieces that are not linked together. This results in some limitations, but the equipment is constantly evolving and more fully automated equipment will be developed.

Current perfect binders that use hot melt or PUR can produce great paperback books. To produce a hardbound book, bookbinders would run a “paper” cover in the cover feeder to cover the adhesive and then later remove the two outer excess endpapers. To solve this problem, we developed an endsheet that is combined with a spine lining reinforcing material that can be applied in the cover feed station. With this combined endpaper, the perfect binder can now produce a book block with endpapers and a spine reinforcement that is ready to proceed as a hardcover book.

The LBS Combined endpaper can be made with a wide variety of reinforcing materials. Most are made with cotton cambric, but we can also use cotton stretch, nylon stretch, or specification drill.

The newest style of the combined endsheet is the textbook version. It is a Universal™ endsheet with a spine reinforcement of drill. A flysheet is bound in with the book block. After the book block is prepared with a perfect binder, the book can be side sewn to insure the heavy text block will stay together. In just one operation you apply the universal drill reinforced endpaper and spine liner.

Not only does the Combined endpaper save several operations—it produces a better book. LBS is glad to provide samples for you to see how this technology can help you reduce costs and produce great bindings.

Verona Cloth - Always look on the bright side of life...

Have you ever heard that Monty Python classic, Always look on the Bright Side of Life? I was creating a e-page about our new brighter palette of Verona book cloth yesterday, I suddenly realized I was softly singing the chorus. I admittedly felt a little bit silly, but Sherri (sitting 5 feet away) didn't seem to notice, and since my little karaoke session and the bright Verona colors had lifted my mood, I guess it's all good. It really is amazing how color enhances life's experiences!

Bright, day-glow, contemporary - whatever you want to call it - saturated color is hot right now. It's the perfect little energy boost without the caffeine or the calories.

Just imagine a photo book highlighting vacation adventures covered in Verona's Summer Pool - a cool and tempting shade of aqua blue. Add the rich texture of woven cloth and you've created a book that you'll love to revisit again and again.

Verona is also perfect for luxury packaging because it stands out in a crowd and offers a sophisticated look and feel.

Looking for a more traditional cover material? LBS stocks 27 shades of Verona book cloth in a variety of colors from bright and contemporary to classic and refined.

Experience Verona for yourself! Swatch books are now available. Let me know if you'd like one.

Combined Endsheets Demo at On-Demand Conference

Last week marked the 2010 On Demand Conference and Expo and the 3rd year LBS has partnered with equipment manufacturers at On Demand and similar events to demo the Combined Endsheet and Universal Endsheet running on pefect binders. This year we partnered with Standard Horizon and Bourg.

The Combined Endsheet was definently the star of our product demonstrations. It's a proven favorite for Photo Books, Yearbooks, and other on-demand books that are manufactured to consistant thicknesses. The reason for its popularity is that it allows the book manufacturer to attach folded endsheets AND reinforcing cloth to the bookblock during the binding process. The Combined Endsheet is simply loaded into the perfect binder's cover feeder in place of a paper cover. The final result is a reinforced bookblock ready for casing in.

Incase you didn't see the demos at the show, here are videos of the Combined Endsheet running on Horizon and Bourg Perfect binders. More videos available at http://tinyurl.com/LBSvideos.

Please let me know if you'd like more information or samples for testing. Enjoy!

Greening Up Your Reading...

I just read an interesting article in the New York Times, How Green Is My iPad?, By DANIEL GOLEMAN and GREGORY NORRIS. In the article, Daniel and Gregory compare the greenness of a traditional hardcover book to Apple's new iPad. The conclusion? The bound book wins the short game. You need to read 40-100 books on your e-reader to break even.

They analyzed a typical book. What if you built a book deliberately trying to minimize its impact on the environment? There are many earth friendly bindery options available that can directly reduce your eco impact AND help your book stand the test of time.

Binders Board:
Did you know that binders board is made completely of recycled material? In fact, much of it is PCW (post consumer waste)coming directly from your curbside bin. That book you just bought could contain last month's Wall Street Journal or an old Wheaties box. It doesn't get much greener than that!

Book Cloth:
Covering a book in book cloth adds to its usable life. Plus, many LBS cloth cover materials are woven from renewable cotton and lightly starched or coated with a water-based inert coating. If you really want to go green, consider Cot-Linen book cloth. It's a 100% cotton / linen blend woven into a cloth that's never dyed, bleached or coated. Talk about reducing your impact.

Endsheets:
As with book cloth, a quality endsheet adds to the usable life of your book. LBS manufactures endsheets using only high quality endleaf paper. FSC certified endleaf and papers with recycled content are also available.

Reinforcing Material & Case Liners
Choosing reinforcing materials for their performance characteristics ensures the stability of your bindings. That doesn't mean that you have to ignore your environmental concerns. LBS offers many spine liners woven from renewable cotton or manufactured from 100% recycled material. All LBS caseliners are 100% recycled and recyclable.

Ultimately, binding a quality book that will last a lifetime saves energy and material resources and is the best thing you can do for the environment.

The Miracle that is Perfect Binding

Whether you're new to bookbinding or a long time veteran, it's hard to deny that the perfect binder has proven itself to be a wonderful resource for on-demand book manufacturing. The quality of perfect binding is constantly improving, bringing what many playfully call “not-so-perfect binding” closer to the strength and flexibility of sewn bindings. Another link in the chain of the evolution perfect binding and on-demand book manufacturing are undergoing is the LBS Combined Endsheet.

The Combined Endsheet offers the speed and ease of perfect binding with the durability, permanence and value of cased-in editions. It is made up of two folded endsheets joined at the fold by a strip of cloth reinforcing tape. Simply load the endsheet into the cover feeder on your perfect binder (instead of your paper cover). The result is a reinforced bookblock ready to case-in.
